UNIVERSAL INSTRUCTIONS
Durablue will now include a new set of universal instructions with all of its axles. This will help answer more questions and make installation easier. You can download the new instructions.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS for 20-1153p, 20-1142p, 20-1142sp, 20-1142ex, 20-2142ex, 20-1128p, 20-1128sp, 20-1128ex, 20-2128ex

  1. Remove the old axle, noting the position of the disc and sprocket flanges.
  2. Remove the Posi*Lock nut assembly from the Durablue axle by removing the c-clip ring and sliding off the nut assembly. The nut assembly will be reinstalled the same way, so pay attention to the Posi*Lock orientation on the axle.
  3. If you are installing the axle in a pre 2003 Blaster, remove the c-clip and keeper ring from the brake side of the axle (the larger of the two inner-most splines). Take the large ring from the plastic sack and slide it onto the axle so that it is between the carrier bearing and the larger diameter spline. When installed correctly, this ring covers a section of spline. Skip to #5.
  4. Slide the brake hub (Banshee) or sprocket hub (Raptor) onto the axle.
  5. Slide the axle through the bearing carrier.
  6. Slide the sprocket hub (Banshee/Blaster) or brake hub (Raptor) onto the axle.
  7. Install the nut assembly as shown. Tighten the axle in the bearing carrier 20-40 lbs-ft
(not especially important, just tight). Tighten the allen screw to 17 lbs-ft, clamping the nut.
  8. Pre 2003 Blaster owners will need to slide the brake rotor flange onto the axle
(the flange "floats" on the spline). Ride the vehicle and check for axle tightness.

You may have to retighten the axle. After retightening, use a thread lock compound on the s screw when clamping for the final time.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS for 20-1142

1> Remove the old axle, noting the position of the disc and sprocket flanges.

2> If you are installing the axle in a pre 2003 Blaster, remove the c-clip and keeper ring from the brake side of the axle. Take the large ring from the plastic sack and slide it onto the axle so that it is between the carrier bearing and the larger diameter spline. When installed correctly, this ring covers a section of spline. Skip to #4.

3> Slide the brake hub onto the axle.

4> Slide the axle through the bearing carrier.

5> Slide the sprocket flange onto the axle.

6> Tighten the axle in the swing arm using the stock nut assembly or Durablue Posi*Lock 20-1632.

7> Pre 2003 Blaster owners will need to slide the brake rotor flange onto the axle (the flange "floats" on the spline). Ride the vehicle and check for axle tightness. You may have to retighten the axle.

IMPORTANT AXLE INFORMATION

In spite of the warranty we offer, some axles are prone to breakage due to major design flaws in the original ATV.

Honda trx400ex
This bike has a short swing arm that angles down excessively (look at the bike from the side). Due to the angularity of the swing arm, there is a tendency for the bike to “jam” the axle into ground, virtually eliminating the action of the suspension. Imagine the front end off the ground (as in landing a jump) and you will see that there is no suspension action at all. The entire mass of the bike and rider (not to mention the impact load) are landing entirely on the axle. Your bike, effectively, has no rear suspension. The result is a broken axle (if this impact exceeds the tensile strength of the shaft). Be aware that the axle is fine, the bike is not.

Look for a major redesign axle and swing arm combination from Durablue in the future. Until then, be prepared to replace many axles.

Yamaha Raptor and Polaris
These two models have the same problem. Each bike is heavy and powerful (the Raptor is especially fast and used for extreme activity). Each has a very small, inadequate diameter axle. This is a combination that spells axle problems. The Raptor addressed its “small axle” problem with its very short axle. The result was a very unstable machine, however.

In general, wider axles create more leverage (loading). Using a shorter axle, while giving up stability, will increase axle life.

Can Am 450 Instructions

If you haven't removed this axle before it can be quite a challenge. Our instruction will make removal of the Can Am 450, 08 axle easy. Although the Durablue Can Am axle won't be out for several weeks we thought if you need to replace your Can Am 450, 08 axle that these instructions may help.
